Why Should You Invest in a Kindle DX Cover?

Ah, so you’ve finally got your hands on a Kindle DX. The screen is even clearer than you imagined. It’s so light to hold, it seems you could hold it all day without trouble. It holds so many books, it will keep you reading for a year or more. So what’s the fuss with these covers? Why not just use the Kindle bare, like it was created? A cover would kind of spoil such a wonderful creation, wouldn’t it, adding weight and bulk. It wouldn’t be pure Kindle any more.

Well, there are a few of reasons for adding a Kindle DX cover to your new found joy:

The first is protection. You won’t need to have your Kindle for long before you notice some marks appearing on it. There are stick-on covers available which protect from bumps and scratches while maintaining a minimalist approach in terms of added weight and bulk. So the stick-on covers stay on your Kindle all the time, but that can be an advantage because you never know when a bump or scratch can occur. Another approach is to have a removable cover for your Kindle DX, such as a leather pouch, which protects your Kindle in transit, and is removed while you are reading. That way, your Kindle is seriously protected when the protection is needed, but when the protection isn’t needed (hopefully!), the Kindle is as bare as the day it was born, with no added weight or bulk. An in-between approach is something like a silicone cover, which is not as minimalist as a stick-on, but offers more protection and stays on the Kindle all the time.

The second reason for adding a cover to your Kindle DX is convenience. Do you read your Kindle in the dark? Maybe a lighted cover is for you, as the Kindle screen does not have a backlight. Do you take notes with paper and pen while you read? Maybe a cover which has pockets for a pen and notepad would be just the thing for your needs. By using a cover with appropriate features, you can have items which you use with your Kindle all the time kept close to your Kindle so that they are handy when you want them.

A third reason for a cover is fashion. Covers are available with every conceivable pattern or colour. You can also use your own image for some of them, making endless personalisations possible. The kind of cover which you choose for your Kindle DX ultimately makes a statement about yourself, even if you don’t consider that when making your choice. Some people like bright colours and loud patterns. Some prefer more subdued patterns and colours. Some like the class and strength of leather, while others want customisable images on stick-ons. Even when choosing a cover for its functionality, like built-in lights or pockets for notebooks or pens, it speaks of you, the person behind the Kindle and its cover.
